The medieval period in Rome is almost invisible, buried by the great Baroque machine that covered it from the 1500s onwards.
It was a difficult moment: Rome was no longer the center of the world but one among the many country towns, with few inhabitants, no richness, and almost no power. Almost. Because it is precisely in this period that the figure of the Pope and the ecclesiastical hierarchy will lay the foundations for a new great renaissance, which will be clearly visible from the XV century onwards.
A town of fields, flocks, towers, noble families, fiefs, mercenary soldiers, priests, visionary saints...
It is a peculiar moment, full of contradictions but also of new creative ideas.
The “dark” Middle Ages is, in fact, a period of great ferment and great changes, and even in Rome it has left its traces.
The visit includes two medieval churches / monasteries as well as one of the most interesting museums in Rome, the Domus of the Celian Hill (Case Romane del Celio), a clear evidence of the economic, political and demographic passage of the city.
